About the author
Melissa Post
Melissa was born and raised in Boston and went on to attend Dartmouth College, later earning her MBA from NYU. An avid reader and writer, she has always loved spirited debate, thoughtful conversation, and problem-solving - interests that led her to a career in consulting. She later turned to entrepreneurship, co-founding a company with friends she met through college and running a local business focused on helping families in her community stay connected. She also recently launched a sleepaway camp placement business with her two sisters.
Melissa lives in Westport, Connecticut, with her husband Fred, who is simultaneously her toughest critic and biggest fan; without him, this story would still be just an idea. Together they have twin daughters Ally and Dylan (whose curiosity inspired this book), and a son Griffin, as well as two dogs, Rocky and Rusty. Some of her happiest moments have come from reading with her children, and she hopes this book sparks imagination, creates joy, and encourages kids to simply wonder. This is her first book.
FAQs
Where did the idea for this book come from?
When one of my twin daughters (who is now 14!) was 6 or 7, she used to struggle to fall asleep. We would lie in her bed together telling stories, and one night we started discussing the word "spoon" and what a strange word it was. We then discussed the word "fork," which also was a funny one. Back then, I would sit outside her room for 20-30 minutes waiting for her to fall asleep. That night, after that conversation, I started to think as I waited outside her room about words...and why they are called what they are...and an idea was born!
What ages is this book best for?
This book is best for kids ages 4-8, but can be read by kids of all ages who have an imagination and like to laugh!
Have you ever written a book before?
This is my first book! I had ideas of books in the past, but nothing that took off. I have one idea I still may pursue when I grow up=)
What was the process like from idea to publication?
In reality, I wrote the beginnings of this book many years ago, and it sat in the bottom of my inbox without another thought. A few years back, I looked at it again, read it to my family - and a few friends - and got some good feedback. I KNEW the illustrations would be the key to bringing the story and idea to life, but didn't know where to start. Fortuitously, a friend of mine posted on Facebook that she had published a children's book! I reached out, we met, and she connected me with her publisher - Saratoga Publishing - and the rest was history. They helped me get connected to the amazing illustrator, Anthony, who made the story so much of what it is today. It was a long process, but I learned so much, worked with amazing people, and just hope kids (and their parents!) enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
